{"id":1296,"date":"2025-10-24T18:34:45","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T18:34:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themotornerd.blog\/?p=1296"},"modified":"2025-10-24T18:34:45","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T18:34:45","slug":"the-rise-of-laurin-heinrich-i-motornerd-mouthpiece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themotornerd.blog\/index.php\/2025\/10\/24\/the-rise-of-laurin-heinrich-i-motornerd-mouthpiece\/","title":{"rendered":"The Rise of Laurin Heinrich I Motornerd Mouthpiece"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was yesterday afternoon, watching the rain pelt my train home from University that I found myself with an inevitable predicament every blogger must at some point face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Friday now mere hours away, just what was I going to write about for the Mouthpiece?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was scrolling Instagram at the time, listening to an old episode of the excellent <em>Beyond The Grid<\/em> podcast featuring Emerson Fittipaldi while simultaneously mulling this over in my head when BAM. The announcement slaps me out of my scroll. Suddenly, Friday&#8217;s article seems all the less daunting. In fact,  it looks a fun one to write. I won&#8217;t bore you with any more of my (perhaps slightly pretentious) scene-setting pre-amble though. Instead I&#8217;ll just get straight to the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s official. Come Bahrain, Porsche&#8217;s latest prodigy will meet their latest prototype. Three years after he won the right to a junior works contract, Laurin Heinrich will pilot a 963 for the first time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could argue ever since he won the Porsche shootout back in 2022, at Motorland Aragorn, that this was always the 24 year-old&#8217;s destiny. Ever since he&#8217;s proved his mettle on two continents, won arguably IMSA&#8217;s toughest championship in GTD Pro and ultimately proven himself worthy of the drive he will no doubt be relishing in November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What better time, then, for a writeup on an already successful career for a man who somehow seems destined to only expand his legend?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It almost went horribly wrong from the moment a then 15-year old Heinrich stepped into cars. After graduating with flying colours from the German karting scene where he wrapped up multiple titles, his aspirations for a full season of Formula 4 were fulfilled. The jump is always handled with differing levels of ease by every driver that successfully makes it out of karting. Some land with two feet and a 10 from the judges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heinrich broke both his knees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2017 German Formula 4 campaign ended with the German ranked dead last in the standings, with a best finish of fourteenth for the Heinrich motorsport team ran by his family. Now I must admit that, as the only true privateer in a field containing Prema, Van Amersfoort and Jenzer Motorsport it was always going to be a truly Sisyphean effort to match those aforementioned giants of the junior formulae scene. Still, the results were bad enough that Heinrich threw in the towel after six rounds and wouldn&#8217;t return to racing for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s been a trend in recent years of drivers trying to prise open the door to F1 when it is simply locked, yet instead of taking another path they throw yet more weight into it, hoping they might be the ones to crack its hinges. Yet, as we&#8217;ve seen with Felipe Drugovich, Richard Verschoor and Ralph Boschung all they end up with are lost years. In Boschung&#8217;s case it was enough for him to retire from racing altogether. Perhaps it was due to that horrendous debut year in Formulae cars that Heinrich wisely chose not to return to open wheelers. Dusting himself down in time for 2019 to roll around, the German bravely chose to try again &#8211; virtually from scratch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where his association with Porsche began, and the boy from Kurnach rebuilt his dream. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because if Formula One was no longer your goal, there was always sportscar racing. A vastly different driving style with far less electronics and systems, a style that rewarded more than just outright pace. Here, you could really get your elbows out without fear of losing a front wing or sidepod damage. The cars were sturdier, able to take the brunt of both amateurs and pros alike. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entering the Porsche Sports Cup Germany in it&#8217;s 5E class, no one expected what was to come. The teenager&#8217;s record spoke for itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the 10 races that season, Heinrich took half the available poles, won six races and only finished off the podium once. All in his first season of sportscar racing. All at the tender age of 17. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was inevitable that Heinrich&#8217;s performance would cause ripples up the German motorsport ladder, and someone would soon snap him up. They came in the form of Cartech Motorsport, from the Porsche Carerra Cup Germany. A series renowned for producing incredible talent, and landing the winner in the Porsche Junior shootout for the chance to fight the world&#8217;s best Porsche Cup racers for a junior works contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Needless to say, Heinrich found himself with a full time seat ahead of the 2020 season and a one-off weekend in the highest form of Porsche one-make competition &#8211; the Porsche Supercup, which had the luxury of being on the F1 support bill in its European rounds. Two tenth place finishes were encouraging, but his focus was on the German championship. Two titles in as many years would prove a stretch too far, but by no means was Heinrich unable to prove his immense skill. With two wins and his maiden pole position in the series, he&#8217;d finish fourth overall. At every step he was still proving to be something quite special when racing in Stuttgart machinery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although 2021&#8217;s results in the German and Supercup series weren&#8217;t world-beating, finishing fourth in both, they were enough to impress the cherry-picking talent scouts at Porsche themselves. In 2021, Heinrich was headed to Spain, and that year&#8217;s Porsche Junior shootout. No doubt it was the biggest opportunity of his life, and that&#8217;s almost certainly why Heinrich threw everything he had at the coveted contract dangled on a string to the twelve entrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What he needed now, more than ever, was a performance so utterly brilliant that it would have Porsche  raising their second eyebrow, and take a serious look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The odds of 12\/1 are never exactly favourable, but this was more than just a race as the shootout name suggested. Everything was thrown at each driver. Mental fitness, physical fitness, driving through vastly different conditions. media training and mechanical understanding were all part of the assessment. In short it was Heinrich&#8217;s toughest gauntlet yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if Porsche had been slumped on their sofa reminiscing over old 956 footage and had him on their second screen before, they were bolt upright by the end of day three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Needless to say, Heinrich got the contract and ever since, he&#8217;s been vindicating their faith.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now with the direct support of Stuttgart, Heinrich finally took the Porsche Carerra Cup Germany title by nearly 30 points ahead of 2021&#8217;s WEC GTE Am runner up Dylan Pereira, future Supercup champion Bastian Buus and the man who&#8217;d beaten Heinrich to those previous two titles &#8211; Larry Ten Voorde. He was also just 20 points from taking the Supercup title too, though he&#8217;d eventually settle for third. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heinrich had finally fulfilled his potential just three years after restarting his entire racing career, driving with such precision and brilliance that no one would have ever believed him capable of in 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the charm of Heinrich lies far deeper than in his stats. It feels far too obvious to say, but the real talent lies in his racecraft. He&#8217;s someone I always find great pleasure in watching, who&#8217;s totally unphased by the often chaotic, elbows-out style found in the GTD Pro class that he won in 2024. And it&#8217;s not just me. That title was a huge contributing factor as to why he was named Dailysportscar&#8217;s GT Driver of the Year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With his promotion, there&#8217;s the obvious question that everyone &#8211; myself included &#8211; will be wanting an answer for as soon as possible. That is, could this drive be more than just a one-off reward for his three years of loyal service?
