JDC Miller meanwhile were up to fifth in their 2025 spec Porsche 953 and having a very strong run indeed. With the FCY called out to deal with the Ford, both BMW’s and the #7 Porsche all pitted immediately while the #6 stayed out a lap longer, as Porsche split their strategy.

As Julien Andlauer led the GTP field away Cadillac found themselves with one horse effectively out of the race as the Wayne Taylor #10 of Ricky Taylor’s engine blew up along the backstretch, and it would be withdrawn into the pits in an attempt to find a cure. Meanwhile, behind Andlauer’s #7 Porsche with two hours remaining the top five was formed of Sheldon Van Der Linde’s #24 BMW, ahead of Laurens Vanthoor’s #6 in third place with the #93 Acura in fourth and the #40 WTR Cadillac of Louis Deletraz.

With the final hour closing in on the teams, the final driver swaps were made. The race leading #7 would be taken to the end by Felipe Nasr, the #6 had Laurens Vanthoor and hunting down both as Jack Aitken in the #31 Cadillac as all three converged into a final battle, less than two seconds apart as the HoR #007 Aston Martin Valkyrie slowed on the banking with suspension failure, the car would go behind the wall as the final hour ticked over.

Vanthoor was first to bring in his 963 for the final round of pit stops, alongside the #93 Acura and JDC Miller’s #85. The defending race winner would vacate his car for Kevin Estre as the first of the factory Porsches re-entered the track with 45 minutes left. Aitken was next to pit, with a brand new set of tyres for the final stint. The upshot was that the #31 jumped the #6 while Nasr’s #7 held the overall lead, but Aitken closed up on fresher tyres with 45 minutes left. Meanwhile BMW’s #25 of Marco Wittman was also catching both the front runners having also overtaken the #6. Eventually though the #6 dropped further back, and an issue was suspected.

Overall honours though would got to Porsche for the third year in a row, with Felipe Nasr guiding the #7 home alongside Laurin Heinrich – in just his second start in a 963 – and Julien Andlauer in just his third IMSA start. Jack Aitken, Frederik Vest, Connor Zillisch and Earl Bamber come up short once again as they did in 2025, but all credit to them for a brilliant effort that had me on the edge of my seat.

BMW also record their best finish in the race, with their first overall podium at this event in the modern era, with Dries Vanthoor, Rene Rast, Robin Frinjs and Sheldon Van Der Linde clinching third ahead of the #6 Porsche.

LMP2 – Crowdstrike Complete Sensational Comeback After Late Pit Stop Call As Inter Europol Come Close Again In The Rolex

AO Racing’s #99 was now back in the lead ahead of the #04 Crowdstrike, while the #73 Pratt-Miller Motorsports machine returned from behind the wall, now running 54th overall and 12th in class, but the two swapped places after the FCY was brought out for the #64’s FCY. The rest of the top five were, with two hours remaining were the #343 of Inter Europol, the #52 Bryan Herta Autosport car and United Autosport’s #22.

With little to speak of for the class ahead of the final pit stops it was the #04 of Alex Quinn, Tom Dillmann’s #43 of Inter Europol and Paul Di Resta’s #22 with Nick Cassidy’s #343 and the #99 of Dane Cameron.

A crucial call was made when the race leading #04 was brought in for a splash and dash, but such was the gap it had built that it exited the pits still with a healthy lead over the #43 of Inter Europol, and it would hold on for a remarkable comeback story. At the first corner they were facing the wrong way with considerable damage Alex Quinn, George Kurtz, Malthe Jakobsen and Toby Sowery take the victory after an amazing comeback.

GTD PRO – BMW Take Class Honours With Paul Miller, Pfaff Fight Back to 6th, Corvette Falter After Domination Early On

Ford had been struggling ever since before the fog FCY, and now the #64 Ford of Mike Rockenfeller bulged smoke on the banking and let loose fluid, the car’s race effectively done in an instant. It meant that not only had Ford’s chances of claiming a second Rolex 24 victory been ruined, but the HoR Aston Martin #27 and AO Racing’s #77 ‘Rexy’ they had a huge advantage, having exited the pits just before the FCY was called out. The upshot of this drama was that with two hours remaining the #911 Manthey of Thomas Preining led the way ahead of the #1 Paul Miller BMW, Maxime Martin’s #48 Winward Racing Mercedes that had fought its way back onto the lead lap and 75 Express’ #75.

The #69 Getspeed was given a penalty for cutting the course at turn seven.

With an hour to go though, it was the Pfaff Lamborghini Huracan GT3 – in it’s last race – that had fought back to take the lead of the class, ahead of Maro Engel’s 75 Express Racing #75 and Thomas Preining’s #911 Manthey EMA Porsche. AO Racing’s #77 ‘Rexy’ also received a penalty for cutting the course at turn seven, and then lost its’ front bodywork after contact with the Turner Motorsport #96 GTD. It would re-emerge 39th overall and 9th in class.

With the #1 pitting first of the contenders, it meant that they would have to fuel save if they wanted to get to the end as Maro Engel continued surging forward before pitting a lap later and staying in until the end. When the action returned to the track though it was still Dan Harper in the lead, ahead of Engel’s #75 by roughly 4 seconds, with the #48 Winward car a further 12 back.

The early pitstop proved enough, as Paul Miller Racing’s #1 of Dan Harper, Max Hesse, Neil Verhagen and Connor Di Phillipi take class honours in GTD Pro!

GTD – Winward Fend Off Late Magnus Challenge In Grandstand Finale As Aston Claim Double Podium, Heartbreak for DXDT and Turner Motorsports.

DXDT’s #36 Corvette had hit trouble recently and they received another crushing blow late on, as a loose tyre on pit lane copped them a drive through penalty The penalty dropped them to 53rd overall and 17th in class, from which point they eventually became the latest retirement of the race. After the FCY the order was as follows: The Aston Martins of Nicki Thiim in Magnus Racing’s #44 and Mattia Drudi’s HoR #27 ahead of Jens Klingmann’s #96 Turner Motorsports BMW and Matthew Bell’s #13 AWA Corvette that won this race last year. The Manthey #912 of Riccardo Pera would be handed a drive through penalty, dropping it from ninth.

Contact with the #77 left Turner Motorsports #96 with a drive through penalty, and they were hit with another for improper pit attire, putting pay to one of the strongest efforts of the race as the two Astons remained close. But in the final round of pitstops the #44 and #27 Astons were suddenly split by the #57 of Winward Racing and Phillip Ellis, who eventually hounded the car.

In the end Winward snatched it at the bus stop from Magnus’s #44 with 20 minutes remaining as a titanic battle emerged before the latter took it back at turn one, and later there was a heartstopping moment where the two touched on the tri-oval, that saw Ellis’ #57 slip away with a larger lead. Credit must be given to both drivers, because they both kept control of their cars in what would’ve otherwise been not only their races over, but an FCY and the end of the race full stop. Magnus caught back up though, and they continued fighting right till the flag but in the end it was Winward #57 of Russel Ward, Phillip Ellis, Indy Dontje and Lucas Auer who take the victory.

We may have had nearly a third of this race run under FCY for the midnight fog, but even so this year’s edition of the Rolex 24 was a blast to write on and to watch as a fan! We’ll have to wait a while until Sebring comes around at the end of March, and I’ll be returning to write sportscar racing then. In the meantime, my podcast will officially start up and there’ll be my thoughts and commentary on the Asian Le Mans Series, F1’s testing and the Bathurst 12 Hours.

Bring on 2026, and the second year of this blog!

image credit: Osajus Photography from Asheville, NC, United States, CC BY 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

GTP –
