A brand that as of late has turned a corner in its competitive streak. Three Le Man wins, a WEC Driver’s and Manufacturer’s title and now it seems, a truly race-winning F1 machine. For the first time in a while it’s all been going rather swell, and perhaps that punctuates Ferrari’s decision to forgo any jokers or major upgrades to the 499P this year.

And given the results posted in 2025, why should they?

The Ferrari 499P is the current poster-car of the Hypercar era, with as much bite inside the 3 litre twin-turbo V6 as there is external beauty, and all the signs are pointing to 2026 being a mere continuation of this reputation. During it’s season launch last month, the six works drivers explained that, other than the new mandatory aero tests at Windshear in the USA (Previously these were held at Sauber’s facility in Switzerland) and a few tweaks to further optimize the 499P, it was very much the same car that has won Le Mans three years in a row.

Those tweaks are of course limited to subtly altering the front and rear aero, specifically in adding more aero-friendly surfaces onto the car as per the new regulations, and altering the airflow over the splitter, wheel arches and adjusting the sidepod radiators. As for the rest, a reprofiled floor should aid stability, redesigned engine cover and side-fences at the rear wheels are all aimed at extracting everything out of the 2026 season.

From what’s been said it very much seems that they’ve done all they can during this off-season, bound by the lack of a joker and at that launch Ferrari’s Head of Endurance Ferdinando Canizzo admitted there’s laptime to be found as the season progresses.

“Clearly, in a championship with a homologated car where nothing can be modified, those margins become increasingly small, so the moment when more significant changes will be required will arrive soon.”

That being said, this does give us an idea of how much can be done without a joker. We know that Porsche, Toyota and BMW have all resorted to unlocking major changes, so it will be very interesting to see whether Ferrari can keep their top spot with such minor changes.

Driver-wise, it’s identical for the two official works cars, with the #50 once again piloted by Nicklas Nielsen, Antonio Fuoco and Miguel Molina, the #51 by James Calado, Antonio Giovinazzi and Alessandro Pier Guidi. For the first time the #83 will also run with an unchanged line up, as Robert Kubica, Phil Hanson and Ye Yefei return to defend their Le Mans crown. Would there be more intrigue if they’d promoted someone new? Perhaps, but when you look at the nine they’ve selected – and consider that Hanson has joined Ye in becoming an official works driver for the Scuderia – there was no need to replace any of them. They’re all in that programme for a reason, and show now signs of slowing down either. It’s one luxury Ferrari have over, say, Porsche, who had to change things up following the departures of Pipo Derani and Mathieu Jaminet to Genesis.

As for the results this year? A home race to start the season will add that extra pressure of course, as an extended hiatus sees Imola serve as the season opener, but with the 499P having won half of the races last year and the quiet confidence the team currently exudes there could well be back to back sportscar world titles for the first time since 1964.

In a brand that values prestige above all else, that’s certainly a target to aim for in 2026.

Ah, Ferrari.
