{"id":1448,"date":"2026-05-14T15:34:57","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T15:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themotornerd.blog\/?p=1448"},"modified":"2026-05-14T15:34:57","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T15:34:57","slug":"spx-uncovering-the-oddities-of-the-nurburgring-24-hours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themotornerd.blog\/index.php\/2026\/05\/14\/spx-uncovering-the-oddities-of-the-nurburgring-24-hours\/","title":{"rendered":"SPX: Uncovering the Oddities of the Nurburgring 24 Hours."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s time for the Green Hell to begin its&#8217; annual showpiece once again, and while Max Verstappen is set to steal the headlines he&#8217;s not the only intriguing entry into this historic race. Indeed, by grid size it&#8217;s one of if not the biggest race in the world, a mantra largely helped by the ethos: Anyone can compete. But in such a diverse grid dominated by GT machinery, there are many humble entries that often go unnoticed. Ahead of this year&#8217;s edition, I decided to highlight a few of my favourites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HWA Evo.R <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No doubt the coolest car of them all, the Evo.R is German team HWA&#8217;s re-imagining of the spellbinding Mercedes 190E that dominated the early 1990s DTM scene. Originally meant as a road-going tribute to one of the greatest ever touring cars, this is the full race ready machine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the historical poetry really is where my focus lies. HWA themselves have an incredibly storied history in German motorsport, despite being only 26 years old. Established ahead of the returning DTM touring car series in 1999 by Mercedes themselves, and taking the name from AMG&#8217;s own founder Hans Werner Aufrecht the team ran the works C-class entries and found success early on, sweeping the first five Teams championships and winning the driver&#8217;s title three times with Bernd Schneider. And they&#8217;ve been ever-present in the series since. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a strong entry too, with three examples set to compete under the designated numbers #61, #62 and #63 with a strong and experienced lineup in each. IMSA regular Adam Adelson will split his duties between the #61 and #62, with Nordschleife regular Lance David-Arnold, Jamie Green and Renger Van Der Zande completing the former. Adelson will be joined in the #62 by the German trio of equal fame. Sebastian Asch is another Nurburgring specialist, with Luca Ludwig and Markus Winkelhock &#8211; yes, that one &#8211; completing the squad. The #63 meanwhile may not have the starpower, but it may well have the staying power. 2012 DTM Champion Bruno Spengler finds himself reunited with HWA having previously competed with them for six seasons, finishing runner up twice. He&#8217;ll be alongside Christian Gebhardt, Norwegian Evan Holdstad and Peter Ludwig. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may not be an entry fighting for overall honours &#8211; that will up for the GT3s to fight over &#8211; but the SPX class in which the Evo.R will compete in could well be theirs. The only other expected challenger was never meant to be here at all&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BMW M3 Touring 24H<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It all began as an April fools joke. No, really. In 2025, BMW got creative, teasing a souped up M3 as a potential 24 Hour racer. It was meant as a fun jest, but an unexpectedly overwhelming plea from motorsport fans around the world saw the marque take them seriously and in the middle of March this year, the unthinkable dropped. For the fans it had been almost a tounge-in-cheek suggestion, but BMW had taken them at their word and delivered their newest idea of the Ultimate Driving Machine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s the history again which takes my fancy, and it&#8217;s especially relevant here. The original M3 took overall victories in this very race on seven occasions, four of them in a row between 1989 and 1992, and later were piloted by Sabine Schmitz among others to her back-to-back wins in 1996 and 1997. To drop some more legendary names in the fold: Roberto Ravalgia, Emmanuele Pirro, Joachim Winkelhock and Johnny Cecotto. And now as the M3 returns to the &#8216;ring, not only will it carry modern legends in their quest for a class win, it will face off against it&#8217;s most legendary rival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And ok, it is pretty much just the standard M4 GT3 Evo we&#8217;re accustomed to with a few fancy bits of styling and bodywork done to represent the M3 and give it that true estate feel but you simply can&#8217;t deny how awesome it is. And I have to give BMW my full respect on this, as they&#8217;ve given it the proper treatment when it comes to the drivers. It&#8217;s a full factory lineup, with Jens Klingmann, 2016 N24 overall winner Connor Di Phillipi, Neil Verhagen and Ugo De Wilde partnering up in the aim of glory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The estate by nature never really gets much of a chance when it comes to Motorsport, and whenever it does it usually ends up becoming an icon in and of itself. But that&#8217;s always come from an unfortunate typecasting of the loveable ugly duckling. The M3 touring by contrast feels like the N24 equivalent of a Garage 56 entry, and hopefully it can prove the estate to be more than just a meme when it comes to motorsport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SPX honours will be the goal, and the stage is set for the ressurection of DTM&#8217;s greatest rivalry. M3 V 190E was all the rage in the early 90s, and while nostalgia will be in full swing all throughout the race it&#8217;s set to be one last hurrah for two of the greatest touring machines of all time. There is one crew in SPX hoping to spoil the nostalgia-filled party however&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>KTM X-BOW<\/strong> <strong>GTX<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s been a quiet but consistent competitor at this race, with the history to prove it. Austrian outfit KTM are known far more for their motorcycling exploits than this oft-forgotten track racer. In fact, the best publicity the X-Bow ever got was an episode of Top Gear, in which Jeremy Clarkson drove the GTX during a film at Donington. On that day the opponents were two British oddities: Morgan&#8217;s throwback Three Wheeler, and the Caterham Seven. So, it&#8217;s also familiar with the unusual. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Run by Austrian team Reiter Engineering, the headline driver is that of Laurents Horr who will be joined by three others all with experience in this very machine. Marcel Marchewicz, Miklas Born and Arne Hoffmeister are brand new to the KTM that was last here in 2024 with Dorr Motorsport.  Reiter Engineering was formerly a big partner of Lamborghini, contesting various GT3 machinery from the Italian marque across Europe and the world, and have recently expanded their portfolio. Having supported the development of the GTX they&#8217;ve been contesting it in this race since 2015, and most recently competed as KTM&#8217;s factory team in the 2022 edition it&#8217;s a team with plenty of experience and talent.
