{"id":573,"date":"2025-01-26T03:40:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-26T03:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themotornerd.blog\/?p=573"},"modified":"2025-01-26T03:41:06","modified_gmt":"2025-01-26T03:41:06","slug":"2025-rolex-24-race-diaries-hours-7-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themotornerd.blog\/index.php\/2025\/01\/26\/2025-rolex-24-race-diaries-hours-7-9\/","title":{"rendered":"2025 ROLEX 24 RACE DIARIES: HOURS 7-9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The 2025 24 Hours of Daytona is underway, and I\u2019m here to document the race and my experience as a sportscar fan over the course of the 24 hours. With updates every three hours, I hope to tell this legendary race\u2019s story as the platinum era continues into 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On the restart, Colin Braun took the lead in the no.60 Acura, after the no.6 Porsche dropped from second to ninth on the final pace lap, Matt Campbell spun. Worse was to come, as a drive through penalty was awarded seconds later for crew working on the car illegally in the pit box.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There was a minor scuffle in the Porsche Penske pitbox &#8211; on entry, the no.6 turned too sharply in a similar fashion to Dries Vanthoor\u2019s own incident earlier and nearly collided with the sister car, costing both valuable time and the lead of the race. Following this, Cadillac ran 1\u20133-4 with only Marciello\u2019s BMW preventing a provisional podium sweep. It was the no.40 of Louis Deletraz leading, third was Brendon Hartley in the no.10 and Jack Aitken in the no.31<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The no.24 car then set about taking back the lead from Louis Deletraz\u2019s no.40 Cadillac &#8211; Rafaelle Marciello made it happen, closing in and taking the lead from the Swiss driver with just under 7 hours gone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The no.007 Heart of Racing Aston Martin comes to a halt after Roman De Angelis lost a wheel just seventeen minutes into his stint, bringing out another full course yellow.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ten GTP cars were still on the lead lap by this point, with Jack Aitken leading as the race restarted. Marciello had now stepped out of the no.24 BMW, with Dries Vanthoor inheriting the car.\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>And the restart would be short lived, with the GTD Pro leading Paul Miller Racing no.48 being involved in a monumental crash on the run down to turn 2, which also brought significant damage to United Autosport\u2019s no.2 and also the no.40 Cadillac of Louis Deletraz in the GTP class. Also involved was the no.9 Pfaff Lamborghini and the no.73 Pratt and Miller LMP2. AO Racing\u2019s no.77 Rexy managed to avoid the carnage and emerged from the wreckage unscathed &#8211; but only just.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The collision, caused by Deletraz spinning of his own accord and then coming back onto the track, has taken both itself, the no.2 United LMP2 and the race leading no.48 GTD Pro car out of contention, with all being towed back to the garage.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A heart-in-mouth, high speed accident which caused huge implications for GTP and GTD Pro especially for the rest of the race, and one that was not an easy cleanup job.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>As the marshalls cleared the track, the no.007 Aston was officially classed as a retirement. The no.40 would later join it in the camp of cars whose Daytona adventure is done for the year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When things got back underway it was Jack Aitken in the no.31 Cadillac who led as the no.74 LMP2 got a drive through penalty, meanwhile Brendon Hartley went through the tire barrier chicanes after missing the bus stop, and the no.25 BMW was spun round at turn one by the no.5 Proton Porsche driven by Neel Jani, with Sheldon Van De Linde a passenger.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And then, incredibly there was even more drama on the restart &#8211; the fan favourite no.83 Iron Dames car suffered a puncture on the back stretch, losing significant time in the process.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Paul Di Resta now led the LMP2 class with the no.22 United Autosports, as GTD Pro was going the way of Fred Vervisch and the no.65 Ford, who\u2019d been running at the front since the green flag. GTD was still being lead by Forte Racing\u2019s no.78 Lamborghini of Franck Perera, as Nick Tandy took the lead of the race. Both he and Earl Bamber are vying to complete a historic feat: Become the first driver in history to claim overall wins at all four 24 Hour races; Daytona, Spa, Le Mans and Nurburgring.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The no.60 was then involved late on in the ninth hour in contact down in the Western Horseshoe with Felix Rosenqvist at the wheel, costing it valuable seconds as Vanthoor continued his charge, catching Mathieu Jaminet in the no.6 Porsche and taking second place. Meanwhile, the no.48 car returned from behind the wall though it\u2019s still removed from contention.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So with nine hours done, and fifteen to go it\u2019s Nicky Tandy who leads ahead of Dries Vanthoor, as the no.31 Cadillac and no.6 Porsche battle for third as I write. LMP2 is still all about Spike, now driven by Johnny Edgar who\u2019s nine seconds to the good of Paul-Loup Chatin.
