Will Ferrari redeem themselves after last year\u2019s strategy blunder? And just who will take victory in the closest LMGT3 field yet? It\u2019s all to play for as Le Mans looms in the background, just under two months away.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pole sitter James Calado led the 36 strong field away as the race went green, as Nicklas Nielsen set about climbing through the field having started eighteenth. The #93 Peugeot climbed to sixth before Aqua Minerali as the sister car\u00a0 started strong as well. Kevin Magnussen in the #15 had to defend from the two Toyotas behind him as Giovinazzi and Robert Kubica\u2019s #83 Ferrari broke away.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In LMGT3 the #46 BMW took and held the lead from the #21 AF Corse Ferrari. Proton\u2019s #88 Ford started fast and soon was up to fourth place. Overall then, it was a clean start as a rhythm was soon found.\u00a0<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But the man on a charge was Nicklas Nielsen, who in under half an hour held the fastest recorded top speed of the race and was also up to thirteenth and challenging Laurens Vanthoor\u2019s #6 Porsche. Things started to get frantic, as many cars including the #21 Ferrari received penalties for breaching the start procedure. By now those looking to double stint were saving their tyres, while those looking to gain track position on track were jostling. Nielsen then passed Vanthoor for twelfth.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Corvette had been struggling somewhat prior to the race, and things worsened for the #33 of Ben Keating when an attempted overtake from the #85 Iron Dames car tagged them round into the gravel trap at the first corner. As a result the race was neutralised, the first FCY of the race having been brought out to sweep away the gravel.\u00a0<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Afterwards the first lead change of the race occurred, with Francois Heriau in the #21 overtaking the #46 WRT BMW to inherit first place, though Al Harthy would fight back and cut the five second gap back to virtually inches.\u00a0<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And then LMGT3 pitstops came in towards the end of the first hour, with the leaders entering first. Multiple penalties for LMGT3 cars for the likes of the #21 Ferrari and #87 Lexus meant WRT\u2019s #46 car could open up the gap and establish the lead of six seconds.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meanwhile in Hypercar it was the #50 and #009 Aston Martin to pit first, the latter opting to double stint its tyres and hoping to gain time through a differing strategy to those ahead.\u00a0<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The other major things of note with the pit stops was the #93 Peugeot dropping behind the #36 Alpine, a car that it had been battling for laps on end to this point. Meanwhile the sister #35 car had a drive through penalty and dropped further back to sixteenth. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The #50\u2019s early pitstop meant the Ferrari gained yet more places and by the end of the cycle was running in the top ten, albeit with a fifteen percent virtual energy deficit. Up front, it was still the #51 Ferrari leading the #83 AF Corse Ferrari with BMW\u2019s #15 in third and the Toyotas still running fourth and fifth, #8 ahead of #7. Incredibly, not even ninety minutes into the six hour event the #50 was already up to sixth thanks to the mind boggling pace of Nicklas Nielsen.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>While fighting the #38 Cadillac of Earl Bamber, the #93 Peugeot of Paul Di Resta found itself pointing the wrong way having been helped into a spin at Tosa.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meanwhile, both Lexus and Mercedes were looking really strong. The former ran third and fourth following good pitstops, while the Iron Lynx run Mercedes had their pro drivers in, Maxime Martin and Matteo Cairoli pushing on ahead. Rivazza saw more LMGT3 drama as Yasser Shahin made contact with the Heart of Racing #27, launching the Aston Martin into the barriers and taking it out of contention. A safety car was called out to deal with the stricken Aston.\u00a0<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On the restart it was the same three cars that roared away, with the #51 ahead of the #83 and Kevin Magnussen still at the wheel of the #15. The LMGT3 leaders held station also, as Nicklas Nielsen was now chasing the two Toyotas in sixth place.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pit Stops then came round again, with the LMGT3 leaders all coming together as the Lexus pair jumped the #21 Ferrari. In fact, they even surpassed the #46 after the #87 car took only fuel, Clemens Schmid now aboard that machine. The sister #78 Lexus now ran third. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So then, a raging first two hours of this six hour epic. As Ferrari lead with dominance can the #50 climb its way back up to the lead? And can Lexus overcome BMW\u2019s immense pace in LMGT3?
